Talkin’ Bout Stems
Native Instruments have released the first proper look at what mixing with Stems is all about, and it hasn’t half whet our appetites for the launch. The new ‘Stems’ audio format breaks tracks down into four different parts: bass, drums, melody, and vocals, allowing you to manipulate each one individually. As the video shows, that could mean dropping sections out of the mix, or applying effects to an isolated stem, but where things get really interesting is the possibility of meshing only certain parts of a track with another.
The Stems Creator Tool is another notable feature to look out for, allowing producers to render new and existing tracks into Stems files. All told it looks like opening up a new world of possibilities for DJs, and totally resetting what remixing means in the live setting.
