St. John at Hackney
The church of St. John at Hackney has existed at the heart of E5 for over 200 years, but since 2011 it’s been proving that you CAN teach an old church new tricks. Nowadays it is one of the area’s largest concert venues with a capacity of 1,400, and an atmosphere that casts it as a rare gem in London’s live music scene.
St. John’s has played host to a staggering array of names given it’s recent emergence on the gigging scene. Ed Sheeran, Coldplay, Jessie Ware, Emeli Sande, Purity Ring, Jamie XX, Bonnie Prince Billy, Elbow, and Anna Calvi have all performed in its unique surrounds, and the top quality programming shows no signs of abating as 2015 comes to a climax. Concerts from Cat Power, King Midas Sound, Daughter, Rhye, and Bloc Party are set to take place, and that’s not all.
Their premier event series, the St. John Sessions, are noted for their unique programming, bringing together some of the finest musicians and sonic visionaries in contemporary music. Running since 2013 with support from The Wire and Boiler Room, past events have included Nils Frahm, Actress, Wolfgang Voigt, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Julia Holter. The remaining Sessions this year will see Oren Ambarchi, Lubomyr Melnyk, Sir Richard Bishop, and Faust take to the stage in this bewitching setting, so if you’ve yet to experience what St. John’s has to offer, it might just be time to come and find out.
