St. John at Hackney on The Hour
Resident Advisor dropped the first edition of ‘The Hour’ recently – their new monthly discussion-based podcast – with a segment on the rise of local church St. John at Hackney as both centre of the community and prized live music venue. Give it a listen HERE.
St. John’s has been growing its reputation as a venue since it began hosting live events in 2011. In that time its unique atmosphere, acoustics and feel have prompted everyone from Secretsundaze to Nils Frahm to put on shows there. In the last year alone things have ramped up as global superstars rubbed shoulders with the ranks of left field electronica that had previously made up the majority of bookings via the St. John’s Sessions. Florence & The Machine, Coldplay, and Jamie xx have joined featured names like King Midas Sound, Lubomyr Melnyk, and more recently Berlin uber trio Moderat, solidifying St. John’s reputation as a unique venue for every occasion.
The real point of distinction when it comes to St. John’s though is its continued life as a fully functioning church, despite taking on the mantle of successful live venue too. As the RA podcast explores, along with regular services, community functions like food banks, financial advice services, and dance classes cast this church as a unique example of a religious institution adapting its use AND remaining loyal to its congregation. Music listings are always being added, so keep an eye out HERE, as these days, you never know who might be gracing St. John’s alter next…
